About this film

Shades of Survival is a powerful documentary that explores the experiences of Black women diagnosed with breast cancer across continental Africa, the UK, and the USA. Through deeply personal interviews, the film examines the healthcare inequities Black women face at every step of their journey, while celebrating their courage and advocacy for change. With expert insights blended into the personal stories, Shades of Survival offers a stark and important look at the systemic challenges that too often fail this community.

Feedback from preview viewers

A self-funded production, we have done everything in our power to take care of everybody involved in the documentary – above all, the wonderful women who have shared testimonies around their own breast cancer journeys. Our Executive Producer and anchor, Victoria Ekanoye, is a breast cancer survivor. Our Director, David Ayeni, is dedicated to women’s wellbeing and honouring their stories, having lost two close friends to the disease. As a result, we are committed to amplifying the voices and experiences of Black women and championing their wellbeing – within the production as well as within the messaging of the film.
