Across three continents, women’s voices rise to break the silence on breast cancer
Shades of Survival is a powerful documentary that explores the experiences of Black women diagnosed with breast cancer across continental Africa, the UK, and the USA. Through deeply personal interviews, the film examines the healthcare inequities Black women face at every step of their journey, while celebrating their courage and advocacy for change. With expert insights blended into the personal stories, Shades of Survival offers a stark and important look at the systemic challenges that too often fail this community.

A self-funded production, we have done everything in our power to take care of everybody involved in the documentary – above all, the wonderful women who have shared the testimony around their own breast cancers. Our Executive Producer, Victoria Ekanoye, is a Black woman and a breast cancer survivor. Another of our producers Di Rosen, leading the South Africa shoot, is also a breast cancer survivor. Our Black (male) director, David Ayeni, is dedicated to women’s wellbeing and honouring their stories, having lost two close friends to the disease. As a result, the project has been dedicated from the beginning to honouring the voices and experiences of Black women and championing their wellbeing – within the production as well as within the messaging of the film. At every step of the way, we have discussed what will help and support women and the Black community and cancer sufferers the most, and how to create a film we are proud of not just for its film-making, but for its potential reach and protection of all those involved.
